As the technology employed to exploit natural resources has developed, the materials and products used to extract them have had to evolve too, in order to provide essential reliability under increasingly arduous operating conditions.
There are currently five generic elastomer types in significant use in the oil and gas industry, namely Nitrile (NBR), Hydrogenated Nitrile (HNBR), Fluoroelastomer (FKM), Tetrafluoroethylene/Propylene (FEPM) and Perfluoroelastomer (FFKM) - all of which can be used in our custom-engineered selection of V-rings.
These elastomers are selected for sealing applications according to their physical and chemical characteristics, such as temperature capability and media resistance. However, there are many different material grades that fall under these elastomer types. It is important to recognise that the seal material compounder turns a raw polymer into an engineering elastomer through the addition of a multitude of compounding ingredients. It is the nature and combination of these ingredients that ultimately defines the characteristics of an elastomer component, and their suitability for more complex applications.
Choosing your component
In most circumstances, standard lip seals are suitable for oil and gas applications, but when a standard lip seal is not the best option, a custom, no-compromise solution can be provided in the form of customised lip seals and V-rings.

Why V-rings play such a crucial role within the Oil and Gas Industry
V-ring seals are axial shaft seals, available in a wide range of sizes, making them highly effective for many applications. The V-ring fits directly onto the shaft and seals axially against a counterface (such as a shaft collar), thrust washer, or bearing face.
During their lifetime, these robust components withstand a great deal, while even during their installation, they are often stretched over a shaft and pushed against their subsequent seat.
Although they can withstand a small amount of pressure, their primary function is to protect the internal elements of the sealing system, bearings and other rotating components susceptible to wear from ingress of external contaminants.
